Signs and symptoms of loss of appetite when dogs:

  • Weight loss.
  • Idle, general weakness, vomiting.
  • Yellowing the color of the dog, and hepatitis, or jaundice.
  • Injury to the dog with some pain.
  • The size of some organs in the dog has changed, such as changes in the shape and size of his eyes, and the swelling of his abdomen.
  • Low heart rate, shortness of breath.

Causes of loss of appetite in dogs

  • Aging, and aging.
  • Slow growth.
  • Poisoning
  • Appearance of teeth, or disease of mouth and teeth.
  • Infectious diseases, respiratory diseases, gastrointestinal tract, bone, heart, or endocrine.
  • A dog is infected with a bacterial infection as a result of infection, or infection from another dog.
  • Feeling tense, bored, and depressed.
  • Use a non-stimulant method when serving meals.
  • Change the dog’s place of residence, and move it to another place, causing the surrounding environment to change.

  • Medical examination: Before starting treatment, the veterinarian should perform the following tests to provide the appropriate treatment:
    • Examine the face, eyes, mouth, teeth, and neck.
    • Check the heart, blood, and urine.
    • Examination of abdomen and chest, using radiography.
    • Examine cells and connective tissue, by taking biopsies of them.

  • Stages of treating anorexia in dogs:
    • Diagnosis of the underlying problem, treatment of the cause of anorexia, through oral medications, or surgical procedures.
    • Provide a healthy and integrated diet for the dog.
    • Make small meals, frequently throughout the day.
    • Improve the taste of food, to open the appetite of the dog, and motivate it to eat, by adding some flavorings, or chicken broth, vegetable broth, or canned food.
    • Heat the food in proportion to the body temperature.
    • Feed the dog using a spoon, or fingers, where the pet responds to it, more than eating from the bowl.
    • If you abstain from eating for three days or more, it is advisable to give the painkillers, based on the diagnosis of the doctor, the dog for two days, and review the veterinarian, if not recovered, to complete the treatment.
